The Linux Operating System

Free and Open-Source Architecture

The Unix operating system was first released in 1970 and quickly gained much popularity with businesses and academic institutions. However, it was not until 1984 that Richard Stallman founded of the GNU Project with the creation of a completely free Unix-compatible software system in mind. While the endeavor was in many ways successful, it was impeded by the continued failure to produce the core, or the Kernel, essential to the projects function.

In 1991, Linus Torvalds began development on an alternative to Andrew Tannenbaum's MINIX, to allow him to run on hardware not compatible with the Unix operating system used by the University of Helsinki. The project grew until it was finally able to function independently of the MINIX core. Torvalds had unknowingly created what would become the Linux Kernel, the basis for the most noteworthy open-source collaborative in the world today.

The term Linux has been adopted as the generic title under which Unix-compatible operating systems developed around the Linux Kernel, are known. These projects are most remarkable for their free and open-source architecture. In the past, Linux operating systems were predominantly used in servers, and while this is still true, recent popularity has seen a huge growth in personal and commercial use.
